COLD KISSES

AMBERIAN DAWN, a Finland based band, has just released their latest effort entitled ''Circus Black''. Their music could be simply linked with older Nightwish. Classical influences are evident, operatic female vocals are there as well, and, of course, keyboards play the biggest role. Their latest issue is probably the most matured record that they have ever done. So, the lovers of Gothic-power metal should definitly check the interview.
Hi there! ''Circus Black'' is the title for your upcoming release so it will be welcome if you can say few words about it...and present it to our readers.
Tuoms: Circus Black is our best album so far. It's got a very massive but still clear sound. We have several interesting guests appearing on this album, like Timo Kotipelto and Jens Johansson of Stratovarius.

Can you compare your upcoming album with your previous works, especially with your previous album ''End of Eden''?
Heidi: On this new album the songs are in lower pitch than before. It brings a new sound to the album. Also we used real choirs the first time. Tuomas: The general sound of "Circus Black" is quite different compared with "End of Eden". Our newest album is mixed by same guy, Teropekka Virtanen, who mixed our second album. "End of Eden" was mixed by Lari Takala. Besides that we used more orchestral arrangements and real choirs on this production

Where did you record the new album and who was the producer? I noticed also that you prefare so called bombastic production and that this type of production perfectly suits your music.
Tuomas: This album (like all of our albums) was recorded at Rockstar Productions Studio in Hyvinkää, Finland and also at my home studio. I've produced all of AD albums and also this newest one. I agree that this album has a bigger and more bombastic production and it serves this kind of music very well.

I also found that your forthcoming record ''Circus Black'' sounds somehow more mature and even more effective comparing to your previous releases. Can you agree with me?
Tuomas: When I'm composing music, it's all about the feelings I'm have at the moment. That's why all of our albums are different. There's no specific goal on my mind when I'm writing music. It all comes out naturally. Heidi: We also get older and more mature ;)

Many journalists and people around compare your music with Nightwish, do you like that, I mean, surly there are some obvious paralels, here and there...
Tuomas: I don't find so much musical similarities in AD's and NW's music. Of course there's a female vocalist in both bands. People usually want to explain music somehow and easiest way to do it is trying to compare the music with the music of some other band(s). Heidi: I always wonder what is the need to compare....yes, we have some similarities like both are metal bands with female vocalist but that is where the similarities end in my opinion. But if you really try you can find similarities in everything.

What is the story behind the new album? Is there any kind of the link between the cover and the lyrics? What did you try this time to reflect with the music and with the lyrics and cover?
Tuomas: Last summer I was feeling that I'm leading a dark circus at some moment and that's how I got this idea of circus theme. The cover art itself is designed by a graphic designer Jan "Örkki" Yrlund. He also designed the album cover of our previous album. Heidi: Only the song Circus Black is lightly in this theme with the idea of a psychological circus we sometime build in our minds.

Do you plan now to have some shows here and there and to promote your upcoming piece of work? Maybe to share the stage with some bands from Spinefarm as well...
Tuomas: We're planning to do an album release show in Helsinki, Finland. After that we have no plans at the moment. We're very interested about doing shows all over the world, if we are invited.

Do you have some favorite tracks when it comes to a new album? I found that some of the tracks sound indeed effective like ''Cold Kiss''.
Heidi: I personally like songs Charnel´s Ball and Guardian. Tuomas: My favorites on this album are Cold Kiss, Crimson Flower and Charnel' Ball

Also, do you plan to fim one video for some of the tracks from ''Circus Black''. If I am not so wrong you already did it for your previous record.
Tuomas: We shot a music video of song called "Cold Kiss". We have Timo Kotipelto of Stratovarius making a guest appearance on this song and on this video too. Timo did an excellent job.

It seems that there are some many bands from Finland that has a fantastic source of inspiration, a great musical and artistic potential to offer. And, Amberian Dawn is surly one amongst them. But how would you explain there are are so many bands from your country that are really succesful when it comes to music bussiness?
Heidi: I blame the dark wintertime....it is a good source of ispiration for metallers but I see a big exception in Eurovision song contest ...hahha....we Finns really don´t do well there. Except when we went there with metal by Lordi.
