NEVERENDING SORROW

Ankhagram is one man band that is coming from Russia. The only member of this band is Dead. Ankhagram are performing Funeral Doom but with some other influences as well. In Dead's music one could find many influences from classical music and from my personal point of view this is one extra plus. On the other hand, there are some too obvious influences mainly coming from band Shape of Despair. So far, Dead has released 4 full-lengths. So, after the re-releasing of his new material, I have decided to make one interview with him and present this band to our readers!
Since this is the first interview that I have a chance to do with you please can you say few words about Ankhagram in the very beginning of this interview. As far as I have noticed, you are the only member in Ankhagram.
At present, I am the only member Ankhagram. Most likely, it will be always.

How would you like to describe the music of Ankhagram? There are many obvious influences coming especially from Funeral Doom metal, but also some are from Gothic as well. In addition, I think that the classical music also plays a big role.
It is difficult to me to describe the music. I am guided first of all on Funeral Doom. Gothic Metal in classical understanding never especially interested me. Therefore if in Ankhagram there is something from Gothic it is accident and coincidence of circumstances. As to classical music... Agree, it well sounds together with Funeral Doom.

Well, in many reviews journalists draw parallels between your music and Shape of Despair. Since the link is obvious please could you give any comments about this? Is it a compliment to you or not?
There was time when I searched for myself for something new in music, that I would like to listen for hours and hours. Then I have opened for myself Shape of Despair. Yes, it is my most favorite Funeral Doom band. After I have heard their tremendous album “Angels of Distress”, I have been so impressed that have understood, that I would like from the music. Whether now I always would like to know "Can I be the same as Shape of Despair?” It turns out so that I can. For me it is a compliment, certainly.

Your album ''Neverending Sorrow'', after few years, has been once more released though Stygian Crypt. So, please could you give us a short info about this release that was published back in 2007?
Release 2007 is the first full-lenght an album in genre Doom Metal. It was experiment. Then I was under strong impression from Shape of Despair. I never thought that this album will be published on CD, therefore it was always accessible on the Internet. In 2010 Stygian Crypt have offered re-release. I have been shocked by that such large label for me it is ready to release this old album. It had a new, magnificent cover, remastering and the new, improved sounding.

As I noticed before your influences from some well known classical compositors are indeed obvious. So, for the closer of ''Neverending Sorrow'' you choose to use one compositor. What can you tell us about this?
You know, I very much love joint sounding of classical chamber music with Funeral Doom. In the end of an album there was a cover on "Funeral March", yes, it so. The matter is that I am primary did not plan to finish an album this product. It was spontaneous enough. Long time it was ringtone on my phone.

From your personal point of view can you say which album of Ankhagram is the best or the most successful until today?
It seems to me that the most successful is "Neverending Sorrow". Though, there are many people who like the previous album, 2006 "Reankharnation". My favourite album is "Where Are You Now".

''Where are you Now'' is your latest piece of work. Could you say something about this full-length since it is your latest offering and compare it with your previous full-lengths?
As I have told earlier, "Where Are You Now" it is my favorite album. It’s more adult. Not such "gothic", as "Reankharnation", not experiment "like shape of despair", as "Neverending Sorrow", not such chaotic, as "Under Ruins". It’s simply another. Quiet and melancholic, finished. This album is about memoirs. About the past. About the carefree childhood, about heat, about the world which sees the child. About the world which dies in due course.

Also, I would like to ask you now the question about your cover artworks. Probably the one done for ''Where are you Now'' is the most effective but how about the others. Who has done that and what did you try to express with the covers?
-Amazing cover for "Neverending Sorrow" was drawn by Alex Vietar. He listened to an album, drew sketches and showed them to me. I consider that its work very much approaches my music. A cover for "Reankharnation" it is simple a cover :) Cover "Under Ruins" is how I see music from this album. Having listened completely to a ready material, I have thought, with what this music associates at me. I did cover "Where Are You Now" together with the girlfriend. Has told to it idea, and she drew. On this cover feelings and memoirs which depart from the adult and cruel world are represented. It is idea of an album.

The same will go for the lyrics...I mean, I sense some grim and indeed melancholic emotion there, but I sense also the lost love links and other similar moments as well. So, any comments about this?
Yes, I sang that oppresses me. And not only me. All of us we face about what I sang. It is the lost love and loneliness, grief. Misunderstanding of the world, life. To all live people is about what to mourn. I understand that it sounds childly, but all people face it.

And for the end please tells us what are the future plans of Ankhagram? Are you composing a new album or is there any new material in plans right now?
Now I work over new full-length album. Thought and idea of an album - the world around us. Everything that can surround the person in the modern world. Imagine cloudy New York, brisk street on which you stand. "Metro is jammed, restaurants are overflowed, heads crack from small cares.
You have slipped out life, and it remained invariable, full as egg. You should remember that you replaced.
And you wanted to be irreplaceable. For something and for someone."
I do not know when this album will be released, and whether it will be published on CD, or it will be free Internet release.

I would like to thank you for your answers and I wish you the best!
Many thanks for questions. It was very interesting!
