Intwine

HOLD YE MOLD YE LIKE CLAY

Intwine, excellence materialized in ‘’Kingdom of Contradiction’’, their best records so far. This the one of the most unique band on metal scene of today, the ones that are true and original, the ones that you can’t match with other, Intwine! About album, band’s work, personal things and much more, we have talked with their guitarist Jacob Streefkerk.
Hail! What’s going on in tribe of Intwine?
Salutations! We’re doing well, this weekend we’ll be doing the final show of our tour with Skindred in Rotterdam (NL). We’re also currently writing some new material for a windsurf documentary “The children of the wind” so we’re pretty stoked!!

When and how did Intwine formed, what was the main goal of its musicians upon band’s creation?
Intwine was formed about 7 years ago at the Rock Academy in Tilburg (NL), the concept was to create original music influenced by whatever inspired us…and although we’ve grown a great deal since then, our concept has stayed pretty much the same.

What’s the musical background of Intwine members?
We have a very broad taste in music and our band members have relatively different backgrounds, to name a few genres we were actively playing before Intwine: metal, Latin, jazz, rock, soca, zouk, reggae, electronic, experimental etc.

Your recent release have wide range of musical influences, even reagge motives are present, mostly in vocal approach, what musical or personal experiences did you have to make album like this? For me, this unusual mixture of aggression, ambiental flavor and totally abstract atmosphere sounds pretty much unique and original for today’s standards, when we witnessing that there aren’t much bands who are willing to find their own way of expression.
Thanks, I think that our music sounding the way it does is something that comes natural to us, because we’re so used to listening to and playing these various styles. It makes us think less in genres and allows us to approach songs from so many more angles than if we restricted ourselves musically where genres are concerned.

Intwine
From where all of this aggression and fury comes? What kind of emotions, stresses and feelings you pouring in album while composing and writing it?
Haha you make it sound like we’re an emotional and angry bunch, raging against the world, but I understand where you’re coming from. The truth is we’ve had a pretty heavy road to get to where we are now and our music is often our manner of venting and expressing our thoughts on our experiences.

In your music, if I’m not wrong, in traces Tool or Soundgarden may be found, but your vocalist sounds to me like singer named Nemanja ‘’Coyote’’ Kojić from Serbian reagge/hc/metal/rock band ‘’Eyesburn’’, have you heard of them? ‘’Coyote’’ has been part of Max Cavalera’s Soulfly album ‘’Prophecy’’.
Tool and Soundgarden (among others) are definitely bands that we’ve listened to and have influenced us but we’ve never heard of Eyesburn, I’ll be sure to check’m out. We’re also hyped about the Soundgarden’s reuniting!!

Why did you covered ‘’Walking on the Moon’’ from Police, any special reasons? Btw cover sounds amazing, very emotional.
Thanks, there actually was no reason in particular we did that cover, it was just something that our singer Roger was messing around with during preproduction and we dug it so decided to get it cleared and dropped it on the album.

Also, how did you get in touch with Sarah Bettens to guest on your album?
We met Sarah Bettens for the first time a few years back when we were asked to collaborate for an 8-day festival in Rotterdam. We both loved the collaboration and so we asked her to feature on our album and that’s how it came to be.

After this album, do you still planning to explore various musical styles?
We’re always searching for and experimenting with new styles so: most definitely! Do you have plans to shoot any video for song from the album?
We shot and released a video for the track “Perfect” (check www.intwine.nl ) and are currently in talks with our label (Tiefdruck-Musik) about the follow up video.

Also, I want to ask you, where do you see connection between artwork and title of the album? Where did you pick the artist for cover work?
The album name “Kingdom of Contradiction” refers to our experiences in life and as a band. We’ve realized that so much is not what it seems or what we thought hence the burning kite in flight. Our manager/ art designer “Ferry Damen” made the design.

Have you performed any of new tracks in concerts, and how did fans responded to them?
Yes all we play is new material, we’ve had a great response from our fans!!

Continuing talking on live shows, do you planning to go on world tour soon, or something like that? Also, have you been or how many times you’ve been headliner on concerts?
We are currently planning our tour schedule for 2010/2011 and have a European tour in the works. We’ve been around for 7 years so we’ve had quite some headlining shows (I have no idea how many…+/-250).

Your top five metal or non metal albums of all time?
Metal/Rock: Master of Puppets (Metallica), White Pony (Deftones), Make Yourself (Incubus), 13th Step (A Perfect Circle), Animosity (Sevendust). Non Metal: Kassav’ Cho (Kassav’), Kaya (Bob Marley & the Wailers), Sublime (Sublime), Where the light is (John Mayer), Fingerprint (Orange Grove)

What’s the situation in Netherlands about metal music, do you have lot of the domestic and foreigner shows, recording labels…in couple of words, how metal breaths in Netherlands?
The scene is very much alive, but mostly in the underground. They don’t play heavy music or videos on the national radio or tv stations unfortunately. There are however many venues and festivals that feature international and local metal/ heavy rock bands and there are some great magazines and websites dedicated to heavy music.

Does any of band members had problems with drugs of alcohol, and how you look upon those things?
No, there is the occasional drinking and smoking of marijuana but nothing too extreme. We don’t promote alcohol or drugs in any way.

Over the years, what was the craziest things you’ve done since you formed Intwine, any funny story to tell?
Hmm there are so many stories to tell, one story that comes to mind is when we dressed up like samurais and snuck into one of our fan’s yard and gave her and her friends a private concert!

Thanks for your time, this will be all for this time, any last words from you?
Thank you for this opportunity and we hope to do some shows in Serbia soon!! Check out our latest album “Kingdom of Contradiction”!
