WACKEN 2011
Wacken - 04-06.08
Well, the journey to Wacken took some time but anyhow the trip itself was more or less fine especially this part from Frankfurt am Main to Hamburg. We took the train so i was able to see, more or less, the entire northern part of Germany which is actually indeed flat one. But, yet with many interesting details, hidden valleys and hilly regions. So, yeah, it was like a dream-like journey :)!
04.08. Thursday
Here and there before Helloween has started few bands appeared. I wasn't able obviously to check them all, I was actually during this time checking the Wacken playground itself, all important stages and few other things as well especially in the press center. And around 19:00 Helloween has started their Wacken show. Aside of the technical problems the show went, more or less, nice. Helloween has focused themselves on Keeper Era I and II volume so they played more or less the hits from those two issue. Later, when they fixed the sound everything went more then perfect. So, yeah it was my first concert at Wacken and I was indeed happy, no doubt about that. Then my old time favorites Guardians themselves took stage by storm. I was surprised how many people gathered to see Hansi & co. Uh, to be completely honest, there were too many people and I was even unable to observe the show as I wanted. Guys preformed, more or less, the same set list as it was in Belgrade, but of course this show was shorter. So, yeah, I was able once again to check out few tracks from the latest record ''At the Edge of Time''. ''Sacred'', ''Wheel of Time'' and then ''Tanelorn'' everything was sounding more then perfect. And, of course, I have enjoyed in some older hits from Nightfall era and Tales era...No doubt that Guardians offered, from my own point of view, one of the best shows at Wacken 2011. And after Blind Guardian came Ozzy Osbourne. Don't get me wrong I have a great respect for Mr.Ozzy but I was not so much into his music. But, anyhow the show went nice and I was outside of public observing the reactions of the crazy crowd.
05.08.
Ok, this day was reserved for many meetings and interviews. As a matter of fact I was at Wacken not only to watch some bands but also to make some interviews, establish some contacts as well. I have done 3 interviews during the 2nd day with Suidakra, Sirenia and Rhapsody of Fire. But, I was also able to watch some bands. The second day turned out to be the most intensive days perhaps in my entire life so far. Everything has started at Party Stage with Primal Fear. Guys were good, more then good! They preformed, more or less, the songs from their first two full-lengths and I really like these two albums the most. Just beside us there was the parallel show of Ensiferum. I was able only to catch the last tunes of their performance. But, I was able to see them 4 times preforming during last year so I decide to focus my self more on Primal Fear. If I am not so wrong then I was able to see Morbid Angel but i also needed to run from place to place and to schedule some interviews here and there especially in Nuclear Blast tent. But, then at 17:00 Rhapsody of Fire has started their show, the first one that I was able to see. It is hard to say how i was enthusiastic about his one. They were just perfect !!! Well, first thing the sound was indeed full, great and powerful that i was even able to believe. I was at the perfect place where the sound was the most balanced one so I was able to hear and see everything. Fabio and friends delivers the finest assault of old and new hits from each era of their career although their performance was long only 1 hour. The crowd went complete crazy on such a great hits as ''Emerald Sword'', ''On the Way to Ainor'', ''Dawn of Victory'', ''The March of Swordmaster''...there was so much headbanging from my side that few times I have lost myself, completely taken by the finest epic tunes! So, yeah, my friends Rhapsody and Iced Earth were the best on Wacken 2011 !At least from my humble point of view ! Then I took the breathe and meet with guys from Rhapsody, made the interview and view pics as well and then once again came to for headbanging. The next ones were Suidakra and Sirenia at Wet Stage tent. Although that both bands played only half hour their shows were full of crowd and indeed intensive ones. their music is different, but anyhow I was able to lost myself on both performances. I was first timer at Suidakra show so i was really feeling enthusiastic. Mr.Akradious and his companions played more or less the songs from their latest record but there were few songs from their previous career. The final onslaught was with ''Wartunes''! Headbanging and headbanging...the the same was with Sirenia but their music is obviously different from Suidakra's one. More emotional I would say and Gothic as well ! But, yeah, so called Wet Tent was even fuller of crowd during the performance. They focus themselves on 'The Enigma of Life'' but they also preformed few tracks from ''Nice Destinies and Nightfall''. No doubt, Ailyn is a perfect choice for Sirenia.
And them this long, indeed long day I ended trying to ''relax'' myself on Judas Priest. Since they preformed almost two hours it is very hard to say how many song they played but believe me they played all the greats hits from their long career. From ''Breaking the Law'', Screaming for Vengeance'' to ''Painkiller''. They also added few brilliant ballads as well: ''When Night falls Down '' and ''Beyond the Realms of Death''. So, with Judas Priest I ended that intense day, but their show also mark the end of one entire metal era...
06.08.
The third and the last day. After the 2nd day everything was less intensive but this third day I will rememebr until the end of my days. At 18:00 Iced Earth preformed their final show with Matt Barow their vocalist. it is very hard to say was I happy or said, but I think both things in the same time. So much headbanging from the first tunes until the last one. Guys preformed almost every single track that could count as hit from their career. but, the focus was on ''Burnt Offerings'', ''The Dark Saga'' and obviously ''Something Wicked This Way Comes''. Aside from ''Burning Times'' they also played the entire ''Prophecy'' segment with all 3 songs from ''Something''. Few tracks were taken from their earlier ays and they preformed also ''Jack the Ripper'' as well from ''Horrow Show'' era. We were completely wet after this particular show, I wasn't able even to move my neck but who cares anyway !!! One era of my life has died away with Barlow. And a big thanks goes to the guys who were beside me from the first tune to the last especially big greeting goes to the guy in red Burnt Offering t-shirt !!! Of course there were other show at they every day as well :)
Everything has started with on that 3rd day with Moonsorrow performance at 12:00. i was able to see them for the 3rd time within a year and i was indeed satisfied. So, much emotions, so much energy in their sound and music. they are brilliant group no doubt about that i am really happy that i can see that they are developing more and more and improving themselves. then i was able to observe Hellsaw at Wet Tent and Mayhem at Black Stage as well. both shows were interesting in their own way. Kataklysm were also good but I was able to catch just few songs since I was running from one place to other. But, then time came for headliners, for mighty Avantasia. So much people, so much energy...!!!! Tobi thank you for such a great performance. it was indeed unbelievable to see so many stars on stage from Kai Hansen to Michael Kiske and few others as well like Jorn. They even preformed few tracks from their first two legendary albums. So, it was such a gift to me after all. After Avantasia then came Motorhead but I was every tired already packing myself in the press center and then the rain started to heavier fall down. So, i was patient when it comes to waiting to the final act Children of Bodom. but, also the rain has become even heavier but I haven't missed the best part from their career when their preformed songs from ''Follow the Reaper'' and ''Hatebreeder''. So, this was my final shew at Wacken 2011. So, until next year, until Wacken 2012 farewell !!!!
