RAVISHING GRIMNESS
DARKTHRONE
Peaceville CD
One more re-release from our favourite Norwegian duo’s Moonfog years, and the time has come to recall the memories of Darkthrone’s 8th studio album from this perspective. “Ravishing grimness” is in my opinion the classic representative of Darkthrone’s “middle era” as I like to call it: on one side you have ancient albums that shaped the Black Metal as we know it and on the other comes New Wave of Black Heavy Metal whereas period in between got a little forgotten if you ask me. The only thing that is missing in there is controversy of sort because back then Black Metal boom has settled, the scene went elsewhere and Darkthrone were doing what they done the best: recorded good music. Recorded after 3 years’ break (which is to this day not usual for Ted and Gylve) “Ravishing grimness” perfectly embodies the phase I was talking about and also presents main Darkthrone hidden jewel. The music on display was still Black Metal as we know it but it is (especially now) visible that back then Darkthrone started to incorporate little bits and pieces of music that will explode later on albums such as “The cult is alive”, that Black’n’roll touch is heard in drums and guitars alike. If I would describe the music here I would use two words: “depressive” and “monotonous” (but in that good way!). The drums are pretty basic, keeping the simple rhythms and laying the basis for guitar riffs that run a-plenty here: Nocturno has written 5 out of 6 songs on the album and the man really outdid himself with plethora of riffs that sound just awesome, and I must note here that the absolute climax of the album is the opening riff of “The claws of time” which is in my eyes one of the best moments in Darkthrone discography (to quote Fenriz “you should have won the Oscar for this riff, Ted”). Six tracks in 38 minutes will show you, if you aren’t initiated of course, Darkthrone in its shining glory and prove you that this band never needed scandals to make their art successful. Let’s go on to the second disc and, as we are already used to, it features Fenriz and Nocturno Culto comments over the songs. Nocturno was not that talkative on couple of previous sessions so it was very fine idea that he and talkative Fenriz are giving comments together so you are getting one relaxed conversations between two friends, full of interesting details as always – I just dig this idea very much! Oh yeah, and the cover art is changed again and I would like to give my suggestion here that it would be cool for future re-releases to snatch the original cover somewhere in booklet, it would be cool to have it also. All in all, get this if you haven’t got it already, just a KILLER album.
