3THE GHOST YOU GAVE TO MEMetal Blade CDI've became acquainted with this band through some high profile tours that they have done in the past, most notably the Progressive Nation trek with giants Dream Theater, Opeth and Between The Buried And Me – to be chosen to perform in such a company is an instant sign of quality IMHO so I immediately noted 3 as „a band to watch“ but somehow I didn't fully delve into their work apart from some songs listened on youtube and such. Arrival of „The ghost you gave to me“ promo from Metal Blade seems like nice enough introduction to this band so I will do my work of reviewing and have a pleasure to check out the new band for me in the same time, sounds good enough proposition to me! I must admit at the very beginning that I feel that the band's name is somewhat inappropriate – try googling it or typing „3“ in search bar on Last.fm! – but I sincerely hope that „The ghost you gave to me“ will get them enough success to elevate their name higher in those searches, hehe. It should be said that we can apply the term „metal“ very loosely on 3: the fact that they are on Metal Blade will get their name all over metal media but it is true that they walk the thin line somewhere between Rock and Metal, both ingredients flavored with Prog to spice it up. This comparison will immediately make you think of later Porcupine Tree and you wouldn't be far from the truth, it's just that Porcupine Tree are a bit deeper into progressive long winded structures while 3 opted for a more of simple, song oriented approach... but just on a surface, as you delve deeper into the album you will spot the subtle nuances / textures that are cleverly placed into the arrangements just to hook you up and to garner repeated listening sessions. Yes, maybe this is not groundbreaking stuff anymore but 3 are doing it with a lot of taste and sense for the material that should be present so all the lovers of intelligent Heavy driven music and bands such as Porcupine Tree, Coheed and Cambria, Dredg and even Opeth's mellower moments will find something worthy with „The ghost you gave to me“.
