MENCEA - Pyrophoric

PYROPHORIC

MENCEA

Indie Recordings CD

Everybody please pay attention cause we are facing one very fresh and interesting band here, the one that could really go places in the next few years so get hip to them as soon as you can! “Pyrophoric” is second Mencea’s album, their debut “Dark matter, energy noir” was unleashed way back in 2008 and allowed them to play with bands such as Gojira and Sepultura; I must say that I haven’t heard their first album so “Pyrophoric” (coming out on March 23rd, by the way) is my first encounter with the group and thus I will not be able to speak about the development they have reached. “Pyrophoric” is one album that could be thrown into one very small category of metal and I even don’t know how to call it… maybe extreme forward thinking metal? Well, one name springs right to mind very quickly and that is Gojira – Mencea threads the same waters as these ingenious Frenchmen and while you can compare the two bands and the truth is that Mencea is very similar to Gojira’s spirit, it should be said that they haven’t come out as pure copycat but rather they took Gojira philosophy and made something of their own out of it. “Pyrophoric” is chock full of heavy guitar with sometimes polyrhythmic beats to support them, downtuned sounds, occasional blast beats and huge production that supports the band’s ideas just well. I remember well how reviewers had hard time to find acceptable comparisons for early Gojira albums and threw names like Sepultura and Meshuggah to them – the same case is with Mencea so the best thing would be to hear the album for yourself and to find out whether you like it or don’t. What is important is that Mencea have created one fresh album with “Pyrophoric” – it is full of good ideas and musicianship and I am definitely awaiting some very good things from them in the near future.
