FIRE MAKE THUNDER
OSI
Metal Blade CD
As I have mentioned in my Arch/Matheos review, this period is gonna be quite busy for Jim Matheos; after that masterful album “Sympathetic Resonance“ guitar hero from Fates warning in back on the scene in one of his other bands and this time it is OSI, supergroup of Jim who is playing guitars and bass here and Kevin Moore (Chroma Key, ex-Dream Theater) who was responsible for keys and vocals. “Fire Make Thunder“ is duo's fourth full length and it comes three years after its predecessor, excellent “Blood“ and it is recorded in the same way as their other albums: each musician has recorded its part in his own studio, ideas were traded back and forth and drums were done once again by Gavin Harrison (Porcupine Tree) in London. Now that we have cleared the technical details, let's go straight to the most important feature which is music itself and I will say right at the start that we have received one more album that will please the fans of earlier albums. While “Free“ and “Blood“ were drifting more towards ambient waters, “ Fire Make Thunder“ sees OSI returning more to the riff based style which is more than obvious in opening two tracks: “Cold call“ and “Guards“ are both based on hypnotic guitars and strong rhythms underlined with Kevin's synthetic-like vocals but soon thereafter the album flows into mellow are with “Indian curse“ and „Winds won't howl“. This good balance between straight rocking sections and moments that simply require a pair of headphones in order to delve in fully into the atmosphere of the songs is present throughout the whole album, I don't know if the fans of the calmer approach will be satisfied by this but I can tell that the album is very easy to swallow because of that feature. Some riffs were a bit repetitive at the beginning but after a few listenings the album started to truly sink in with all its features, I think that “Fire Make Thunder“ is somewhat more focused album but without any missteps in the atmospheric department. The album is best listened in night hours when you have finished all your daily obligations and you are alone with your thoughts (just like me now) and then “Fire Make Thunder“ will develop fully and you will realise that OSI have released another winner, so here's to hoping that we will see more interesting releases of this unique project in the future...
