FEW AGAINST MANY
FIREWIND
Century Media CD
Some people thought that Gus G's new emplyoment as Ozzy Osbourne's new guitar player would mean the imminent end of Firewind but those people don't know the working ethics of this guitar hero – Firewind managed to promote their previous great album “Days of defiance“ with world tour, in the same time Gus did touring with Ozzy and Firewind managed to write and prepare their seventh full length. Now, the natural exectation would also be that one album prepared in such a rush would not meet the standards set by its predecessors, but feel free to throw those into the water too as “Few Against Many“ rocks just like we got used from this fine Greek power metal machine and in the same time the guys throw in some curveballs so the final result is different enough so they cannot be accused of copying their older stuff. Perhaps you have already seen the video for opening track of the album entitled “Wall of sound“ which represents “Few Against Many“ in very good fashion and can give you good notion what to expect: said song is faster, a bit darker with haunting Bob's keyboard lines and sounds notably thrashy (with some Symphony X touches here and there). “Few Against Many“ continues where the previous album left us off and further develop the spotted increased heaviness on that one, so we must add one plus to Firewind – in time when they are receiving biggest exposure they are not going in some commercial easy listening way but instead they follow their inspiration. So “Few Against Many“ is perhaps the fastest/thrashiest album in Firewind's career: just check out the opening salvo of riffs in “Another dimension“ or title track for definite proof of my words, or for example strong headbanging “Losing my mind“ that reveals one more important facet of “Few Against Many“ – melancholy. Yes, don't expect uptempo hymn hits like “Head up high“ or “Embrace the sun“ as the album carries a bit more brooding atmosphere which is suited to lyrical concept but still there are some mid tempo bangers like “Glorious“ to make the nice balance. The fact that this album is very various is also “Edge of a dream“ which is a full on balad which features collaboration with Finnish ensemble Apocalyptica. Variety has always been strong weapon of Firewind, they always knew how to write songs in all sorts of tempos so you will never get bored with their albums... I just don't like that much the closing track “No heroes, no sinners“ which closes the album in a bit unspectacular note and is surely the least impressive track on the album. But anyway “Few Against Many“ presents another winner for Firewind, the band that proudly carries the flag of true strong power metal in these years and it seems that their end is not in sight. Here's to that and enjoy in “Few Against Many“.
