XASTHUR - Nightmares at Dawn

NIGHTMARES AT DAWN

XASTHUR

Avantgarde Music CD

Say what you will about this one man black metal project hailing from America that was led by Malefic but it sure that Xasthur has its strong place in history of black metal movement, as he inspired hordes of copycats at the first half of previous decade to flood the scene with their useless lo fi garbage excuse for DSBM... but in any case, Xasthur spawned worthy music throughout the larger part of its career. Truth be told, his last couple of offerings were below standards that albums like “The funeral of being“ and “Nocturnal poisoning“ have set in the beginning of its career so it was very wise of Malefic to put an end of Xasthur's life back in 2010. So it is already clear to you that “Nightmares at dawn“ is a sort of posthumous release as it gathers Malefic's material that was written in period between 2004 and 2009 and even some already known songs such as “Prison of mirrors“ that were re-recorded in different manner. The material on display here is in typical Malefic's manner, meaning really harsh sound that blessed the slow atmospheric songs – this period in which the songs were written marked Xasthur's slow transition from pure suicidal black metal to more ambient manner that was fully displayed on project's last issue “Portal of sorrow“. Sometimes one can feel that songs are not developed at their full but I guess that these recordings were kept by Malefic as pure sketches for future endeavours so the listening of “Nightmares at dawn“ represents more of a historical moment of Xasthur and this branch of black metal general. There are even some very interesting moments like cover of none other than Black Sabbath, their song “National acrobat“ has been drawn out and turned inside out to fito into Malefic's wicked vision which was one of the most interesting moments of “Nightmares at dawn“ for me. So all in all, “Nightmares at dawn“ is purely dedicated and set out to those who were really into Xasthur's art as other fans might find it a bit hard to enter into Malefic's world through this one; as I heard another collection of unreleased Xasthur material is being prepared so this is not the last we will hear from this still enigmatic project...
