SOUNDSCAPE OF SILENCE

BEFORE THE DAWN

Cyclone Empire CD

This is the 5th release of Before The Dawn who seems to be very popular in their native Finland (and a bit less in Europe), according to press release. This is my first meeting with this band, and upon the initial listening it came very clear to me why they are big in their homeland, since “Soundscape Of Silence” features many elements which made the bands from Finland huge, and rightfully so. I’ve heard about Before The Dawn before and people used to describe their early releases as some sort of Katatonia worship and I was expecting such stuff, but I was caught off guard a bit by the vastness of their music. Sad melodies of mentioned cult Swedish act, and also the bands in a bit similar vein as Sentenced and Amorphis, are omnipresent, but these lads also feature a lot of tempo changes and different rhythms. Also, Melodeath parts ala Dark Tranquillity or Mors Principium Est can be heard, and from time to time refrains with clear vox (which can remind you on a bunch of modern acts) appear, making this release very vast in terms of inspirations. But overall impression is morose and melancholic as most melodies carry that kind of feelings. It is quite standard thing for Finnish groups, I guess that has got something to do with the climate up there or something, I dunno... One thing is certain, Before The Dawn are no strangers to those beautiful yet profoundly sad emotions, making their origin very clearly heard to all the connoisseurs of the scene. Everything is nicely and tightly played, all the songs are of the similar quality, but it never reaches the star heights as above mentioned bands can. This band is very good at their song craft, but they seem to have just a spot in a second league, and you will listen to this release until something better comes out. I don’t want to be harsh, the album is done in right way but it just doesn’t have that little something that separates good bands from classics. But if your musical taste fits in descriptions stated above, you may try out this album and you will surely spend a couple of nice hours with it...
