ARTAS - The Healing

THE HEALING

ARTAS

Napalm Records CD

It seems that the wave of trendy metal from USA slowly diseasing Europe, and some of the younger bands freely take’s that sound approach. Artas from Vienna (Austria) can easily be considered as one. Too much melodic, seven-stringed guitars, screaming vocals, crunching rhythm section… Only thing that separate this band from the sea of similar groups are the use of different languages in which songs are singed. So, you’ll hear some tracks in English, some in German, some in Spanish…for one debut pretty much interesting. Another interesting moment is the cover version of Stivie Wonder’s mega-hit ‘’Gangsta’s Paradise’’, which in my humble opinion could have been performed better. Instead on original, band have concentrated more on Coolio’s version of the song, but again it’s not bad to hear because I think this is the first metal version of this track. Now, talking about band’s originals, all of the songs are pumped up with aggression and intense and thrashing riffs, spiced with melodic flavor within, which can keeps listeners attention from the beginning until the end, except on vocals, which could’ve been harder at times, and with less use of clean whining parts, which reminds on Trivium’s clear vocals sometimes. Production is bursting, modern and sharp with main focus on violent riffing element and vocals that float between NWOAHM and hard core style. Cover-artwork was handled by Dennis Sibeijin, and it’s very effective and nice designed. From the tracks I would excerpt couple of favorites like ’’Bastardo’’, Through The Dark Gates’’, ‘’The Butcher’s Guilt’’ and ‘’Healing’’ as most representative tunes on the album. All in all, band have potential in this kind of music, nice ideas, but they need more to work on defying of their original approach. This material is interesting for some period, and for one debut release can be enough, but band need more work and improvement in the sound, and especially in vocal style.
