HARVEST OF SEASONS
BLACK LOTUS
Bleak Art Records CD
I didn’t know anything about this band before I have received the copy of their release. From a nice cover I already knew what kind of music to expect, but I was somehow wrong. I expected doom, maybe even acoustic band as those groups from Prophecy Production but it turned out that the sound is more into the black metal vein. “Harvest of Seasons” is faster album and in despite of the image of the group, it could be compared with various BM releases. Although Black Lotus has keyboards, they are more in background but they are important as they are there to make quite a perfect atmosphere and epic-monumental sound. So, do not expect folk-like melodies - instead you’ll hear more harmonic based keys. The production and especially sound of guitars stands somewhere between raw and well-produced recording. Definitely this kind of production suits perfect for this album. As a matter of fact, the music is not virtuous; on the contrary - it’s more complex. There are two types of vocals - one black metal and other clean (chanting-like). BM voice is more frequent, but the clean pieces are the crown of this issue. I was checking “Harvest of Seasons” for unusually long period, playing it many times before writing a review, and I need to add that Canadian Black Lotus have so much to offer to hyper-synthetic-productive metal scene which is drowning in decadence of thousand aimless bands. Definitely these Canadians have a quite well taste and “Harvest of Seasons” offers a good dose of atmospheric, yet extreme metal music. If you like Empyrium (although that there are noticeable variations between these two bands ) and other Prophecy Production releases you should definitely check out Black Lotus.
