AHAB - The Divinity of Oceans

THE DIVINITY OF OCEANS

AHAB

Napalm Records CD

We have Alestorm who’s obsessed with Pirates, we have Summoning which is obsessed with Tolkien etc. and we have German band Ahab which is inspired by depths of ocean, Moby Dick and the world of the sea. They play doom metal, and this is their second full-length album. Album comprises seven long tracks, wrapped in complex structures and deviant arrangements. There are many slow motion parts, acoustic passages filled with melancholic and also brutal vocals. Production is very good, and truly have catch feeling like you listen to a band that plays on the deck of the ship while waves aggressively slams on the body of the ship. Ahab also possess original aura and approach in music, so you can’t find a band with home you can identify them. Unique expression, indeed. While music and performance are very solid, I have little complaint on the vocals. Clean lines are excellent, but use of growling vocals should be improved. They do posses brutal profile, but somehow they aren’t convincing as they should be. At some point they sound like some mumbling telephone maniac. Cover-art is actually painting from Théodore Géricault called "Le Radeau De La Méduse". Painter which is considered to be pioneer of Romantic movement.
