REBELLION - Arise

ARISE

REBELLION

Massacre Records CD

The full title of the album actually is ‘Arise: From Ragnarök to Ginnungagap - The History of the Vikings Volume III’, so this is very obviously the third piece from their monumental epic saga about the Vikings and their heritage. For those who do not know, Rebellion is the band of Uwe Luis, who was the member of Grave Digger and who has parted ways with them after two great albums. So far, I haven’t got the chance to check out any of their efforts properly, but I knew about the band for a quite a long time and I checked few of their tracks on some German CD compilations. Finally, it was a great chance to check out one album of Rebellion in a full version. I am not so overwhelmed with their music, but again ‘Arise’ is not bad piece of work. The music is not typical heavy/power metal, although the production and guitar riffs are very typical for German metal brotherhood. The main difference is the vocal, which is darker comparing to numerous German true metal groups. It reminds me somehow on Norwegian-based Viking act Einherjer and their issue ‘Odin Owns Ye All’. This album of Einherjer was always part of many discussions, because it was recorded with only clean heavy metal-based singing which was actually so characteristic for the bands from 80’s. Nevertheless, Rebellion focuses their style of playing on guitars and strong hymn-like choruses, but there are also, here and there, some background keyboards’ tunes. The best track from new album, with no doubt, is ballad-like ‘Thor’, a song which lasts almost 10 minutes. Also, other songs are pretty ok, but they’re in the shadow on this mighty hymn which is so far the best composition that I’ve heard from Rebellion. If we speak about the style of Rebellion, the music reminds me on the mixture between Iced Earth and those Viking metal bands as Amon Amarth and especially new Tyr’s album. ‘Arise’ surely isn’t a masterpiece, but I guess it could attract some of those true metal fans and especially German metal community.
