CONSECRATION

Geenger Records CD

There is a long and winding road behind this Belgrade unit. Initially started under the moniker Lack Of Motivation they quickly changed the name to Consecration; I have witnessed their gig somewhere around 2002. if I am right (it is hard to tell precise date, I am getting a bit old, you know...) where they played Moonspell and Sentenced covers but ever burning will for exploration of various sound dimensions driven Danilo Nikodinovski (voice & guitar, the only original member) further and after various line-up changes and morphing from Katatonia / Opeth sound across the Isis Doomcore waters Consecration finally got into 2010. to present „.avi“, their most successful creation up to date. Phew, this was long description but maybe the easiest part of this scribble since it was based on pure facts, but now I have to go onto the actual music presented on ".avi“ and the hard task is to sustain my amazement from the work on display here. You see, the actual situation here in Serbia makes it very hard for our bands to release even decent sounding stuff but Consecration manages to put out one completely rounded product, ready to be shipped to the world where it can proudly stand next to popular groups of similar orientation. You see, I have mentioned Isis before and it is very obvious that the brand of Post Metal and giants like them or Neurosis left their mark on Consecration, but I would say that there is more to ".avi" than just being one more Doomcore / Sludge album. Consecration has its roots in Doom Metal genre and one can feel that in crushing heaviness of their riffs, and those heavy parts equally tread the Sludge areas, so if more orthodox metallers come across „.avi“ their need to be hammered by their music can be satisfied. On the other hand, members most certainly take their cues from Post Rock / Metal which can be spotted in development of arrangements and loud / clear axiom... you know the drill, walls of sound, explosions of emotions and all that stuff, right? To top everything off – I know for sure that Danilo and Nikola (second guitarist) share immense passion for Katatonia and Anathema and their finished their school of subtly implementing very few but heart ripping melodies with highest marks – just check out the middle section of „Somna" for the proof! Danilo used growl vocals in the past but that approach is largely abandoned here as he mostly goes for the clean singing, you can only hear the wretched bellows in sludgy „Idiot Glee“ which is by far the heaviest track on „.avi“. By the way, the vocal parts are few and far between letting the music do the talking most of the time, and also all the lyrics are in our domestic language which wasn’t the case in the past. All of this is backed up by very good / competent production which is the courtesy of Studio Undergound; I must add that the album is very „headphones friendly“ (so to say) as that kind of environment will help you to catch all the details in the music, especially the electronic twinklings done by Nemanja which are in the background a bit but give the music very good touch. To conclude this I will return to the beginning - „.avi“ is one beautiful piece of music, well rounded work of experienced musicians and it will for sure go down in history as one of the best releases of harder music in Serbia (in my books for sure, and I hope that the majority of you will agree). The biggest pain in the ass of this whole story is that after all Consecration cannot find the proper label to put their music on physical format. After they have put "Aux" and „2nd april 2008“ online for free download „.avi“ is officialy announced through Geenger Records but one can find it on their website http://consecration.bandcamp.com/ where you can download it for the price of 3 Euros (this situation is very confusing, I hope that Danilo will clear it out for me in an interview which will be ready in a few days from now) so go there and try “.avi” out. If you are from abroad and found yourself in the above descriptions believe me that you will not regret it; and us Serbs already know the status Consecration has and it is well approved by this release.
