STILL LIFE
TRUE
Geenger Records CD
Geenger Records is quickly becoming very strong force in re-uniting the regions of former Yougoslavia through releasing the albums of interesting bands from all over, so after the recent reviews of Mass Hypnosis and Consecration I have the opportunity to face one more album from this label. True (very uninteresting name, by the way) is Croatian Death Metal band which has just released their debut (which shares the name with one legendary album by you-know-who) and they are trying to find their own identity in bottomless sea of Death Metal bands by using the national instrument tamburica (I’m sure that all the people from our land will know what is it) - that is, you will admit, not very often in this field. Intro may mislead you since it features named instrument with female folkish singing and one might think that he is facing some Folk Metal album but already the second track "Once" will clear everything out. True is one band that is rooted in mainly traditional way of playing Death Metal and their influences are probably spread all over Sweden and Florida, with occasional nods to old Sepultura, Black Metal blasts and some Grind / Crust parts thrown in for good measure. Their music is for sure fast and furious but the fact that 3 songs are around 8 minutes in length which takes off their edge a bit (even though "Still Life" is not that long - around 40 minutes) burdens this album quite much as this kind of music doesn't benefit from being complicated. Tamburica is used in not so expected way as it doesn’t play some folk-like segments but rather follow the guitar and bring some kind of weirdness, even calmness, to music. That segments really elevates „Still life“ from overall mediocrity of the album and gives them much needed band identity but truth be told, as I reach the end of the album tambura parts start to really go on my nerves as its high pitched sound takes the focus off the rest. True has some really interesting vision going on, so I hope that they will develop their arrangements a little bit more in the future as being original does not necesarrily equal being good but they possess the potential for sure.
