BANE - Chaos, Darkness & Emptiness

CHAOS, DARKNESS & EMPTINESS

BANE

CD

Bane is the new name on Serbian metal scene but with all the buzz surrounding its name and quality offered in such a short amount of time they have already reached the highest possible positions in the given period. The band is centered around young but very productive Branislav Panic (who is playing the guitars and doing the vocals here) who has decided after the demise of his former Brutal Death band Disdained, which also gained lots of praise in short period, that it is time for something different but yet still in the realms of metal extremities so he quickly gathered the line up and after demo and EP here we got the debut full length. The first thing that one can notice when he got the CD is very qualitative cover art (the thing that is sorely lacking in our bands) but Bane did it in very professional way – they have employed Marcelo Vasco who has already done the works for Vader, Belphegor and Gorgoroth among others, so everything looks just up to par with the current tendencies in extreme metal. „Chaos, darkness & emptiness“ was recorded, mixed and mastered by Honza Kapak (Avenger) in his Hellsound studio and he has also done some good job, I would maybe prefer a bit fuller and heavier sound overall, especially in the drum department, but it is good as it is. So let us now concentrate on the actual music on display... You can find in the booklet special thanks to Jon (Dissection), Ahriman (Dark Funeral) and Jensen (Saturnus) and that can pretty much clear out to you what kind of music is on display (well, to be honest, you can scratch Saturnus out of the picture, only if you would go so far out to find them in melodic work and slow doomy parts towards the end of the album, but I think that it is a different story after all) so it is now clear to you that Bane deals with Swedish Black Death Metal in vein of almighty Dissection, but touches of Dark Funeral are also pretty much evident especially in full-on blasting sections. Bane also can come very close to pure Death Metal territory but still doesn't neglecting their BM base in which cases the spirit of Belphegor is invoked (check out „The true insomnia“ for example); but most of all the spirit of Jon transpires throughout „Chaos, darkness & emptiness“ making Bane legitimate Serbian heirs to Dissection throne. You will get to hear loads of those melodic blood freezing guitars coupled with fast sections, and also recognizable acoustic passages have enriched the album. I need to mark here my biggest complaint about the album and that is certain lack of identity, as this young fellows have entered the "copy" territory a few times during this album - check out for example "Pandemonium" with the part that comes dangerously close to „lord of infernal gather my strenght, carry me through the gates“ part from „The somberlain“ song (fans will know about what I am talking about for sure). Bane desperately need to make out a bit of their personal style as people can easily dismiss them as pure Dissection clone, and that would be pure pity as this band is really worthy. Song arrangements are up to the point and concrete, players are competent on their instruments, the songs are interesting enough as they are so the album just flies by, it just won’t bore you. The material lasts for around 40 minutes which is just right amount of time for this style and it is splint into three chapters entitled „chaos“, „darkness“ and „emptiness“ and it is truly well rounded. Minuses I have mentioned are evident, but it doesn’t prevent „Chaos, darkness & emptiness“ to already be named as the best Black Metal album coming from Serbia in last few years along with Triumfall’s debut; and it is good to see that the bands from our homeland are finally starting to give products that go along with world tendencies and can stand without a shame among them instead of focusing on some third class’ solutions. Definitely recommended.
