BEFORE THE NIGHT TAKES US
ACROSS THE SUN
Metal Blade CD
Quite a new name we have here, but Across The Sun have started out way back in 2004 and since then they have been touring and releasing EPs which eventually led them to the contract with Metal Blade who decided to give these young Metalcore upstarts a fair chance and so we got their debut full length „Before the night takes us“ in front of us. Given that the Metalcore genre is fairly tired and even starwaltz of the genre like Killswitch Engage is putting out below average outputs, it is clear that Across the sun is working in the hard environment, the one which would not forgive one more copycat band so it is clear that they have tried to give some kind of identity to their style. The base is of course standard stop-go riffing, breakdown and vocal changing which is pretty much already seen and heard on bunch of albums and gets stale very quickly, so my mind started to drift away in more than one occasion and that is not so good for such music which pretends to be energetic. The main strenght of "Before the night takes us" are the moments when the band relies primarily on keyboard sections, I wouldn't compare them to similar troops of this ilk but they rather get them close to European soil and melodeath scene, sometimes even with prevailing somber overtones. But unfortunately the momentum that is built by those parts is brought down by clean vocal which sounds somewhat weak in my opinion, as he is struggling to keep up with the music and his colour doesn’t match the vibe after which the band is going. It is nice to see that Across The Sun have worked on gaining something of their own but I still see that they need a lot of work to become full on respectable band.
